What is a heraldic ring? History and modern use

A heraldic ring – also called a lapel ring – is one of the most symbolically charged pieces of jewelry there is. From being an instrument of power in the hands of the nobility during the Middle Ages, the heraldic ring has evolved into a personal and unique piece of jewelry that carries tradition, identity and heritage.

Origin: A piece of jewelry with function

The first heraldic rings appeared in Europe in the 13th century. They were worn primarily by nobles and priests as a way to sign documents. The engraving on the ring – often a family crest, a seal or a symbol of rank – acted as a seal impression in wax. This made each ring unique and difficult to counterfeit.

It was not just a piece of jewelry, but a legal tool that signaled authority, birth, and belonging.

Appearance and materials

Traditionally, the heraldic ring is solid and made of precious metal, usually gold or silver. The surface is flat or slightly domed, and a coat of arms, symbol or monogram is engraved on it – sometimes mirrored to be used as a seal.

At Stjernswärd we create heraldic rings in 18k gold, often with details such as blue or green enamel, gemstones such as tourmaline, and with personal engraving according to the customer's wishes. Each ring is a unique piece of craftsmanship.

Symbolism: More than just aesthetics

Although the heraldic ring is no longer used to sign documents today, it still carries a strong symbolic value. It can represent:

  • A family legacy or lineage

  • A personal story or philosophy of life

  • A connection to a particular place, title, or tradition

  • A sense of belonging and identity

Many of our clients choose to wear a heraldic ring as a discreet yet powerful marker – a piece of jewelry with meaning, beyond trends and surface.

Contemporary usage: Who wears heraldic rings today?

Today, both women and men choose to wear heraldic rings. They are especially popular on occasions such as:

  • Wedding (as a symbolic wedding or gift ring)

  • Degree

  • Heirloom or generational jewelry

  • Anniversary or celebration

A modern heraldic ring is as much a design object as it is a historical heritage. It is suitable for both everyday use and ceremonial occasions – and always carries something deeply personal.
